Loneliness is a part of the human condition. At times, we all feel misunderstood, isolated, left out, or alone. We were created to be in relationship with others. We need to know that we are loved and accepted unconditionally. It’s important to have a network of friends to support and encourage us. Jesus surrounded himself with people, so we can use his relationships as a model for our own. Even when we’ve got people in our lives who care about us, there are times we’ll still feel lonely. Jesus can be our friend and companion. He accepts us no matter where we’re at or what we’ve done.
Take this prayer and make it your own. Just tell God what’s on your mind and what you’re feeling—-be honest--and the Holy Spirit will help you realize what God’s perspective is in your life. Try to pour out your heart to him, as best as you can. The Bible says that if you “draw near to God, he will draw near to you” [James 4:8].
“Lord, here I am. You know what is in my heart; you know these things that happen in my life. I need you. I want to know your heart and what you think about me and your plans for me. I want to know love and the joy of relationship. Would you please help me find those as well? Help me delight in and be able to recognize the blessings of the people you have already put in my life. I pray that you would use relationships in my life to honor you, encourage others and help others have a better sense of who you are. I know that is your heart. But I know that you use everything in life, so help me to see that you are using this time, too. What are you teaching me? Would you help me lean into you and be able to understand how you truly meet every need that I have? Please come be with me and talk to me and speak to my heart. Thank you for who you are. I will praise you for your goodness even though I am feeling lonely. The relationships haven’t worked out… yet. I give you my life. Amen.”
