There are lots of substances that we can become addicted to. Since the fall of mankind in the garden of Eden, human beings have had a hunger in their soul for a relationship with God. Often, we try to fill this void with things besides God— cigarettes, food, alcohol, sex, TV, internet, etc. Nearly anything can become addictive. Sometimes, these things damage our bodies, other times they damage hearts, or both. Nothing should serve as a substitute for God. Only he can bring true fulfillment and satisfaction.
Take this prayer and make it your own.
“Lord, I am so hungry for you. Sometimes I feel empty and I just need something to fill me up. I know that the things in this world can’t bring me true satisfaction. Only you can bring me fulfillment. I don’t want to use substances or material things to take the place of you. There are things in my life that I use to numb, to escape, and to make me feel whole. Help me to break free from my addictions. Help me to care for my mind, body and soul in a way that honors you and puts you first in my life. Lord, help me to be humble enough to ask for help from others who can help to hold me accountable. Thank you that total freedom is found in you! I believe you can set me free from my addictions!”
